How does that work? When I select Autosave, the first time it pops up
(with a new file in writer 1.1.4, Linux), it brings up the File-SaveAs
dialog, so it sure looks like it's really saving the file to me.

Did you ever actually hit the save button?
I don't mean to sound stupid, but all the backup feature in OOo does
is save a current working copy, the file itself is not saved until you
actually hit *Save*.
I would check in your temp file folders which is probably in your user
directory: C: > Documents & Settings > User Name > and then some where
in there on windows for some sort of backup copy. Check the date and
time.
