How can this section be improved?
Try as I have - and I've spent over one hour this week on it - the envelope function simply will not print landscape on my Lexmark 6170. I've tried fooling it by speccing portrait, but nothing works. This has been true of every version of OOo that I've ever tried it on.

I hear you but I do not understand. Let me see if I interpret correctly:
1. You have a printer that will take envelopes with the long edge entering the printer and the short edges in the tray. 2. You have set the printer properties in OOo 3. You have set the envelope up the way you want
Printing of the envelope should be working.
No, the envelope feeds longitudinally; but that's irrelevant, or should be. The fact remains that the envelope function does not work, and trying to switch portrait/landscape settings around to get printer and OOo to agree doesn't work either.
Printing envelopes for me is, at this particular point anyway, a convenience rather than a necessity. Otherwise I would agree 100%, rather than 85%, with Doug's comment in a following post. This is an essential issue that must be addressed, and improving the manual on this point, while desirable, does not do it. Truth be told, at any fairly competent user level one shouldn't need a manual to be able to print an envelope; it should be fairly intuitive and able to be navigated on the fly. The volume of envelope-related complaints on this list simply cannot, IMO, be wisely ignored.
