I knew I should have put those paragraphs after my sarcastic hyperbole.... Which is going to irritate and turn off a new user more? "Go away, we can't help you" or "Here's how to do what you want to do..." when the latter is wrong and could possibly cause a loss of data?
I pose the questions because I don't know the answer, not because I assume I'm right.
I think any advice given from this list has to be taken with a certain caution. All of us are volunteers. I can't imagine a change that has occurred where my advice would cause data loss.
Both scenarios you pose would be equally bad I think, but if they are coming to us for help, data loss might not be any worse than already are at.
(See my first sentence in the previous section. You used the same technique of grammar.)Besides, if we do, where do we stop? Do we support *anything* that touches OOo? Windows XP? Mac OSX? Linux? What about printers? Mice? Browsers? Wireless keyboards? It's easier to see the dividing line when it is drawn so blatantly far away.
Honestly, I hope you realize there is a distinction between this case and Printer, Mice, etc...
Touche.
If some still believe they ought to support PPP, go right ahead. We can't stop you, but please don't argue that it is the *right* thing to do. There are those of us who feel there are good reasons to feel otherwise.
In my opinion, if it's not OOo, this list is not the right support medium. I would hate to see the value of this list watered down.
So, a list where we reject anyone who buys software for more than $10 isn't water down?
Please....
Peter, are you missing or ignoring the sentence early in this message where I propose the first action is to ask the user if he/she has contacted their vendor first?
Fine, I guess if we ask nicely that is okay, but I don't think Cosmi, or any company that charges only $30 for the software is going to have a full time support department. If they say, "Yes I have, and they can't help me," then what? Then is it okay?
I guess, overall, I have just been surprised by the # of rules that giving help is contingent upon for some people.
