I might be speaking out of a dark orifice here, as i don't yet have
3.0. Nevertheless, the topic of dictionaries was hashed over quite a
bit on this last May. Thomas Lange of Sun Germany let it be known that
3.0 would only accept dictionaries that were 'published' in the new
extension format. Presumably any pre-existing dictionaries will be
politely ignored. Ultimately, OpenOffice hopes to close it's eyes until
all custom dictionaries go away. The following quote is from Jonathan
Blake:
If you are using OOo 3.0, you have to learn to program in half a dozen
languages, to install your dictionary. This is because it was deemed
that dictionary.lst was "too difficult to hand edit."
I have just downloaded OpenOffice 3.0. I live in Canada and so want both
a Canadian English dictionary and a French dictionary. Accordingly I
used the menu item Tools → Language → More dictionaries online... which
took me to the OOo extension website at
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/ set to display only
extensions set as dictionaries. I quickly found the dictionaries I
wanted. I was given the choice to either download them as files or to
have OOo install them. I chose the former, as I would like local copies
for installing on other machines at work. Once I had downloaded the two
dictionaries, I installed them with Tools → Extension Manager....
I had no problems. It was far easier than the old dictionary.lst system.
There are obviously still a large number of dictionaries still not
converted to this new format. Currently 52 modules display in the list.
Some have been created by OOo projects and some by individuals.
Seemingly there is a team of volunteers involved in the converting. See
http://www.nabble.com/Vietnamese-dictionary,-FontOOo-for-3.0-td18127989.html
for a discussion of the Vietnamese dictionary which was apparently
accidently missed for a time.
