I didn't have the "s" on "swriter." Wait, that solved two problems but created a new one. My launch command line now says "/opt/openoffice.org3/program/swriter." When I launch it from this command I get a small initial splash screen (not the second one asking what you want to open or start). Then nothing. If I click on the link a second time it properly launches Writer. Every time I want to launch Writer I have to do it twice - once gets the initial splash screen and then nothing, and the second time launches Writer. This may still be caused by failure to install the deb for the gnome stuff.
