Create a link/menu/icon to /opt/openoffice.org3/program/swriter. Ditto
for scalc et al. This one is interesting... all this time folks have
been complaining about a single menu, we finally get one, and you
complain that you don't want one :-)

It does for me if the window has been maximized before closing.

Most likely. These are turned on when Tools|Options|Language
Settings|Languages|Enabled for complex text layout (CTL). You should
file a bug.
