Actually with a monitor like that (I'm assuming it's a wide screen) you
might want to experiment with OOo maximized. OOo 3.0 now provides you
with the ability to view multiple pages side-by-side (click on the zoom
button and select colums). Doesn't work so well on a 17" in 1024x768,
but on your's it should display pretty well.

No. That is for adding the OOo menus & only works if you uninstall your
Ubuntu OOo. I have found that if I resize my OOo 3.0 start window, the
size _is_ retained and is the same when I start it back up. However, I
am running the 32bit version, so perhaps your issue may have to do with
the 64bit version.
