A matter of opinion, but I don't think "easily" is the appropriate
adjective here.
It's embarrassing that a task as simple and as common as inserting the
current date, in a format easily configured by the user and remembered
as the default for future use, remains out of reach.
Even if the user succeeds in finding and configuring a format for the
date field, the entire process has to be repeated every time, and there
is no way to set a format shared by all the dates in a document.
Wouldn't this be solved if OOo exposed the detailed locale settings for
configuration? Load defaults from the system, but allow the user to
change them, then use them as the default formats for things like date
and currency.
