Well at least you let me keep my fingernails... Just for you I loaded kubuntu-desktop on a test machine (what a ugly interface :-). And, in OOo 3.0 I found the same as you've already discovered: no 'Open/Save' dialogs in KDE mode - works fine when you change the session to Gnome. Of course even in KDE mode, the Ubuntu 2.4.1 (hardy) does show the dialog as the go-oo build has included the necessary files/package to do this. So, if you feel adventurous you can try the Ubuntu PPA 3.0 version. But you know of course that blows out your stable (U)OOo 2.4.1 and replaces it with the (PPA-U)OOo 3.0.
