Outline mode would be nice to have (haven't tried the most recent
version of OOo yet, so not sure how it is coming along). If anyone has
taken any classes on how to do technical writing, they would have got
the advice of preparing an outline first. MSO got this one right!

Again, as I mentioned earlier, OOo is perfectly fine for "easy"
documents. But for more involved documents, it still cannot beat LaTeX.
But, IMHO, MS Office does the most terrible job in this scenario though.
It is a strictly no no for such an application.

There is no denying that. I fully agree. In fact, it is my view that
most business customers require MSO only because all other businesses
require it (somehow they think by differing they may harm their profits)
and also due the strong link between MSO and Exchange. Other than these,
and the outline mode, I do not think any of the business people ever do
any complex document preparation (how more complex can you get than a
long Physics technical manuscript or a multi-volume thesis?). Oh, and
the final last good thing businesses usually use, charts and figures
from Excel data -- a base which OOo seems to have covered.

Anyhow, my main concern in my original post was the recent opinions and
articles about code contribution czars and extremely over the top tight
control over new features in OOo development. I gather there have been
some attempts from Sun to justify their controls, but my feeling is that
OOo development image has taken a bit of a beating due to all these
factors.

BTW, I am installing 3.0.1 now. Cannot wait to see what new improvements
are there. Also, I always get a kick out of creating a PDF by using the
icon (though it is not difficult to get a PDF from MSO by installing a
PDF exporting software).

Regards.
