Well,
Thanks to one of the USA mirror sites, I was able to hand out
some 3.1 CDs to a couple of 3.0 users and two people who never
used OOo before. I was at a volunteer work session for our
local Food Band and I had some CDs I made with 3.1, docs,
add-ons, and some more OOo related stuff filling a CD.

They loved the fact that I had the CDs for them to use before
the official release date.

One person I told that Impress could replace "your"
Power Point usage. I told her that I prefer to use
OOo over MS's product, plus it is free. She liked
the Free part.

Let me see, 11am Hamburg? Germany is the time of the
official release. What is that USA Eastern time? 7am
on Friday?
I am glad to have it now instead of waiting for everyone
to start trying to download it on Friday or Saturday,
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, etc., etc., etc..

Get it now, or later it may take very, very, long to
download it.

Kudo's for the effort...

However, I'd recommend against doing this in the future. It is quite a
balancing act to get the software pushed out to the mirrors, coordinate
a release, and stave off the 'early downloaders' in the process.
Subscribe to the release list & you'll (hopefully) see what I am
referring to.

Besides, didn't you previously say that you'd already downloaded
3.1.0rc2? I may be mistaken, but if so, then there was no need to take
up extra bandwidth on the mirrors by downloading another copy - you
already had the final version. The mirrors are provided by organizations
that donate their time, bandwidth, and storage space/resources voluntarily.
Many mirrors have very limited resources & bandwidth, so please keep
that in mind when you encourage list users to download early (unless for
testing) and/or for the next release round.

Well give me a bandwidth figure.
If I can cut it, I can take up some of the slack.
I get 300 gig in monthly bandwidth.

I cannot do a full mirror, but I can host some
of the files, if needed. part of the trouble is
I do not have the "auto updating" options to make
my "mirror" a "mirror" of the default folders.
another problem for me is I get great download speeds
but upload is only 3-4 time faster than dialup.

I just make sure as many people locally can
get the file(s) from my CDs instead of downloading
it themselves. That includes all of the PDF docs,
templates that might work for them, plus all the
extensions that I find that I use. It is about 40
meg shy of a completely full CD. That is a lot of
files they do not need to download themselves. Many
have dialup or a lower/limited speed Internet access
instead of a full 1.5 to 10 meg broadband access.

Also, how would you ask a local Education "Business"
to start hosting some of the mirrored files, stable
version only maybe. There are three in a 30 minute
drive and more than triple that if you go 60-70 minutes
from my location.
