The list can be configured to have unsubscribed users' addresses in
the Reply To headers (it may be thus configured, I don't know). Then
the replier can hit Reply All and if the poster is subscribed, only
the list gets the reply. If the poster is not subscribed, then both
the poster and the list gets the reply. In any case, unless it is a
name that I am familiar with, I try to CC the OP in the rare occasions
where I feel confident enough to help. Maximum, a subscribed user will
get the message twice.

OOo has a huge barrier to entry, and the only thing that makes it's
use possible for a lot of users is the existence of this list. Raising
the bar of entry to use this list will simply mean less OOo users.
