I'm running two different versions of OOo on two different OS's:

The freeware program VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc) is installed and
runs properly on both systems. Among other things it is used to display
MP4 files. It correctly displays the same MP4 file on both systems (the
file is on a shared drive).
On System (a) I can insert the MP4 file into an Impress slide and OOo
will display it properly, presumably using VLC.
On system (b) I cannot insert *that same* MP4 file into an Impress
presentation. When I try I get "The format of the selected file is not
supported".
Question: is the problem with OOo v3.1.1 or with Vista?
Probably the easiest way to test is to also install 3.1.1 on the
WinXPPro and test. Or, if you have a link to an MP4 test file, I'll be
happy to try on one of my WinXPPro test machines w/3.1.1.

Thanks for the offer. I have uploaded the file I'm experimenting with:
URL: https://www.dropboks.com/
e-mail address: [email protected]
Password: storage
File: PoleDancers2.mp4
Procedure: go to the URL and login with the e-mail address & password.
Then you can download the file. Don't worry - the file (video) doesn't
show what its name might suggest.
I look forward to reading your conclusions.
