I do not find ad hominem attacks acceptable at all, and strive not to

reason with someone who would invite such attack upon himself.
The appropriately named Troll/Idiot (see below for a full
justification of that claim) dragged it on still further:
Yet another. You don't seem to be able to resist.
Then Robert Holtzman commented:
I've stayed out of this, but.........If you see a personal attack in
what you've quoted I would conclude you could use some prfessional
help.
And Tanstaafl added:
I agree.
Would some moderator plonk this 'Troll', please!? This is ridiculous.
My comments here are intended to provide relevant information
regarding a repetitive openoffice users list problem stemming
from a single source:
On January 5, 6 6 7 of 2008 someone with the same username
(Troll/Idiot) emailed a total of 18 posts; five of them with the
subject:
bottom-posting Nazis go away! (was Re: [users] OOo and ...
While another five contained the subject:
OOo and Linux/Troll/Idiot- personal attacks
The contents of his posts were similar to those he's sent on this
thread and at that time I too suggested that moderation (and banning
him from the oo users list if necessary) was in order.
That's all I have to say about this issue.
Thanks for bringing that up.
The subject of posting style does come up occasionally, and the
discussion seems to follow the same general course -- someone suggests
that top-posting is preferable and others suggest that he's
inexperienced, unintelligent and mentally unstable. Assertions of that
nature tend to prolong the thread as many of the posts consist of
personal attacks unrelated to merits of either position.
In the recent threads I have not taken a position on the desirability of
any particular style of posting, but have maintained that disagreement
with a poster's position doesn't justify personal attacks, ever. That
position is apparently both controversial and interesting as quite a few
other list members have participated in opposing it, often in ways that
would appear to be inconsistent with list guidelines against flaming.
I think Douglas Hinds' suggestion has some merit, but I suggest banning
those members that have been the most insulting to other people on the
list, and I hope he and others will join me in objecting to further
instances of that behavior.

I believe my response then is appropriate again:
"How's this for an option --
Don't try to impose your personal preferences on everyone else.
Be polite.
That will not only end this thread, it will go a long way toward
avoiding future similar discussions."
