Hi all,

I recently had my WinMe laptop die on me. I was not able to save all
of my configuration files before my HDD turned into a post-modern
paper weight. I did however manage to save a copy of everything in
C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org1.1.4\user.

That was good. Your personal stuff is there for reuse.

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad that I managed to save the relevant data. I'm still stumbling a bit with employing it, though.

I have managed to install OOo 1.1.4 on my new WinXP machine just fine.
My settings have been a bit more difficult. I tried simply copying
my saved user dir over top of the user dir created when I installed
OOo 1.1.4, but this didn't work.

You cannot simply overwrite user as you found out. What you can do is
copy templates and dictionaries, one-at-a-time from old_users to
new_users and put them in the correct directory of new_users.

Hm. I'm merely a user happy to be free of MS's proprietary .doc format. But, I must say the failure of the 'naive' method I first tried seems most unfortunate. I lack the skills to help fix it, but I hope the ToDo list includes making migration from one box to another a bit easier / more intuitive.

Following your suggestion, I was able to get my Templates over. :-)

But, for the rest, not so much :-( My dictionaries show up, but I have lost access to somewhere around 150 auto-replace entries. (Is it possible that I inadvertently added my entries to the OOo dict, rather than to anything that had been stored in /user in my previous computer's OOo installation -- I sure hope not!)

I uninstalled and reinstalled OOo 1.1.4 and it runs fine. But, I had tweaked the interface a fair bit, established quite a few templates, customized my dictionary, etc., etc. Any advice about how to carry over what settings I have from my WinMe installation user directory tree?

The remaining problem is various customizations I made to the interface. I'm picky about how my programs are configured, and now I almost feel lost :-) How do I retrieve things like the way I have set up the toolbars, the default view properties, etc.

I did look before I posted, but if there is documentation covering these, please curse my google skills and point me at it.

If possible, please cc me on any responses. Thanks and best,

And, thanks for the cc. I will be checking on the web-interface, but can't deal with the list volume were I to subscribe. So, further cc's would be most appreciated.

Thanks and best,

Brian vdB
