Hi,
I have installed SuSe Linux 9.3 and cannot read
StarOffice (.sdw) files with OpenOffice anymore.
I changed from Microsoft to StarOffice/OpenOffice
deliberately to avoid the compatibility problems
between different versions of Word. If the
compatibility is now gone I might just as well
return to Microsoft!
I hope you can help me here. If so many thanks in
anticipation.
I cannot reproduce your symptoms with 1.1.4, 1.1.5rc or 1.9m113. I
suggest this is a SuSE problem. See if SuSE offers an upgrade that works
and if not consider replacing whatever is on board with something more
recent from http://download.openoffice.org/ chances are SuSE's version
is old.
I've been using SuSE 9.3 for about a week: I upgraded to OpenOffice
2.0-pre with Yast Online update. If you don't have SuseWatcher set up,
try that. (I looked and don't have any .sdw files on my system or I'd
see if OOo 2.0 opens them.) The online update via SuseWatcher is one of
the most attractive features of SuSE 9.x.

The OOo build in SuSE 9.3 is based on the early OOo beta candidate
1.9.79 and is (heavily?) modified by SuSE which they then number
1.9.79.2. That's info in the Splash Screen. I suggest you download and
install the current developer snapshot from OOo or wait until Version 2
goes Gold. (Don't ask. My crystal ball is in the shop for repair.)
FWIW, using a recent developer snapshot is no different - except the
performance will be more stable - than using the OOo distro that came
with SuSE 9.3.
