  I've done all that and nothing has changed.  Perhaps there is an ENG-UK dict 
in writing aids since it is set to default to one but when I use spellcheck, 
'dictionary language' keeps defaulting to eng-USA even though I keep on 
changing it to ENG-uk. Any clues.

You have installed the en-GB dictionary and ancillary files? If you
haven't do so via File > Wizards
