[users] Opening .ics files

I am using OpenOffice 2.0 in a Windows XP environment. I do not have MS 
Office. I get alerts for the day's events from Google Calendar as .ics 
files, which do not seem to open in OpenOffice. I googled ".ics" and came to 
learn that it's a calendar file for Outlook. Is there any way that I can 
open these files without going to the trouble and expense of getting MS 
Office?

I would really appreciate your help with this.
