Sending your resume is your best option.
Most importantly because the receiving part has no need to edit your resume.
Second as you discovered yourself, the formatting doesn't get lost in
translation.
Third, the layout of your document is no longer dependant on the
receivers printer. In regard to this last point I have seen some
documents fitting perfectly on a page with printer A and spreading over
more pages on printer B.
The easiest way to send your document in pdf is to choose File>Send>Send
as pdf attachment. This way you edit your resume in the odt-file and
always send the latest version.

To Whom It May Concern;
I lost Word when my old hard drive crashed. I went to Best Buy and they told
me about OpenOffice.org so I thought I would give it a try.
I am having a GREAT deal of trouble using OO to create a resume, save it as a Word .doc, and then send it to a computer that has Word. The receiving computer can open it but the format is garbaged. How can this be avoided?
I need to know fast because I am looking for work and companies are expecting
my resume and I want to send them a professional looking resume.
Thanks for you time and efforts on my behalf.
