Hi. Someone answered a question regarding MS Vista by recommending
Ubuntu Linux.
I exclusively use Ubuntu Linux. I am happy with it. With this distro,
you can get all the drivers, firmware etc directly with the OS. With
ubuntu things seems to work out of the box better than with other free
distros like Fedora, Debian, Suse, *BSD etc. Also there is a derivative
of Ubuntu linux called Mint linux whose primary goal is to get things
working out of the box. The best place to look for this is
www.distrowatch.com.
I really do not know much about Operating systems. If I would consider
replacing MS Windows by a Linux system, my main question would be: will
I be able to communicate with other people and read their files, let
them read mine etc. ?
Use openoffice/staroffice and save files as either .doc or .pdf and you
are good to go.
If this rises problems that require specialized
knowledge, I quit.
The best way to find out if you like the linux user experience is to use
virtual machines. Go to www.vmware.com and download a free vmplayer
(http://www.vmware.com/download/player/)
Then you can download one or more of the following operating system
virtual machines images
1) ubuntu linux appliance
http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/ubuntu.html
2) suse linux appliance
http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/594
install the VMplayer you downloaded from vmware.
Unzip the ubuntu linux appliance and suse linux appliance. To run ubuntu
, open the appropriate .VMX file.
By following this path, you are not required to perform a low level
installation of the linux operating systems. Infact, you will be able to
use windows and linux SIMULTANEOUSLY.
One thing I must warn you is that all the files are BIG files and you
will need a fast internet connection, a fast processor and atleast 512
MB of memory.
Hope this helps.
