Hi. Someone answered a question regarding MS Vista by recommending
Ubuntu Linux.
I really do not know much about Operating systems. If I would consider
replacing MS Windows by a Linux system, my main question would be:
will I be able to communicate with other people and read their files,
let them read mine etc. ? If this rises problems that require
specialized knowledge, I quit.

I wouldn't leap at Ubuntu just because it's the name on all lips.
In my opinion, it is not that easy to install and manage, there are more
questions than answers in the forum and mailing lists and the technology
can be woefully lacking.
One of the best places to check out Linux OS information is
http://distrowatch.com/ There is no such thing as a Linux OS. There
are several hundred Linux operating systems.
Any Linux OS will require a substantial investment of time to get every
thing you need working correctly. It's the price of freedom.
