I think to call what I said a "recommendation" would be an overstatement. I believe I said "impressed" - nothing more. I'm still checking it out. Although there's more than enough for "office use", there are still major gotchas for things like audio and midi i/o or web cams, simply because most people use win*ws, so that's what hardware drivers are mostly written for. So if, like me, you're looking to set up a cheap portable sound studio, there are problems. ... > The short answer is: yes you can do all these things under linux. Even Ubuntu has had bad reviews - I just read one where the reviewer couldn't get it to run on some common h/ware. But then, I can't say win*ws has been always plain sailing either. I've got it installed on a usb disk, so I can play around without risking my main system meanwhile. And don't, btw, assume linux is the only alternative -- FreeBSD is /excellent/ once installed, but it won't give a user- friendly system straight out of the box. > > As this is an open office list, I had best just refer you to some other > links to do your own research: and add google of course if there's some time to hunt around, and of course usenet.
