Hi. Someone answered a question regarding MS Vista by recommending
Ubuntu Linux.
I really do not know much about Operating systems. If I would consider
replacing MS Windows by a Linux system, my main question would be:
will I be able to communicate with other people and read their files,
let them read mine etc. ? If this rises problems that require
specialized knowledge, I quit.

Genrally, you can exchange files with others. For example, it makes no
difference which OS you run OpenOffice on. They can all work with
OpenOffice formats and import/export MS Office files etc.
For what its worth, I'll add my 2 cents. Moving to Linux is dependent
on 2 things. 1) The programs you currently depend on for your daily
work and 2) how easily you adapt to new software.
I grew up with Unix and migrated to MS in the mid-80s so I am
comfortable in both worlds and can move between operating systems and
programs with ease. Others, especially those who need step-by-step
procedures to do things find it difficult to change programs. What is
important is that some commercial software is only available in MS
Windows. For example, stock trading software from your favorite
brokerage will probably be MS only. You may have to trade via the
online (browser) access if you move to *nix.
As others have noted, You can usually find replacement software for your
tasks. Quality varies and some data formats are not interchangeable.
How easily you adapt is most important. If you are easily frustrated,
changing may not be for you.
There are many "live CD" versions that can give a view of Linux without
actual installation. These can be a good starting point to see how you
adapt.
Good luck,
Clair
