Eric,

You can save your documents as OOo documents (with extension odt for text,
ods for spreadsheet etc. - this is probably set as the default when you do
File > Save)
or you can use File > Save As and specify the File Type to make them into M$
Word, Excel etc. documents (with a doc, xls, ppt extension). Only the latter
can be read by people using M$ Office.

You can make OOo save your documents automagically as M$ Office documents:
Tols > Options > Load/Save (click on +) > Microsoft Office > different
options for Load & convert  and Convert & save.

If you send your documents by mail, you have the option
File > Send > Email as Microsoft Word
then you won't clutter your hard disk with M$ versions of your OOo work.
