I ran into the same problem: Autumn4 is listed in the Available
to Use section, but double clicking it caused it to disapper and the
template was not applied. (Just like yours.) However, there are two
ways to solve your problem. I think the second one might be a little
easier.
     1) Choose the Default Master Page as your slide master.
Use View > Master > Slide Master to edit the Default Master Page.
Right click the slide in the Slide pane and select Slide Design from
the context menu to open the Slide Design menu. Click the Load button
in the lower right of that window to open the Load Slide Design
window. Under categories, click Presentation. Autumn4 should be the
top of the list of templates. Click Autumn4, and then click OK. Click
OK in the Slide Design window. Then use View > Normal. It should now
work.
     2) For this you need a bitmap of Autumn4. Use the Default Master
Page as your slide master. Format > Area will open the Area window.
Make sure the Bitmaps tab is selected. Use the Import button to
import the Autumn4 bitmap. Click the same button to add this bitmap
to the bitmap list. (The files to save is standard.sob.) Then click
the Area tab. Select Bitmaps in the Fill drop down menu. Then select
Autumn4 from the list. Click OK.
You may find additional information on creating presentations
from the "Getting Started with Impress" chapter of the Getting
Started Guide. It is available at
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors2/index.html. An
Impress Guide is also being written by the OOo Authors group, but it
is incomplete at this time.
