James is correct...just change the file association and you should have your MS Office Icons back....
I use both suites....I just installed OpenOffice a couple of weeks ago and am comparing it right now...so far I believe it would meet my needs. Select Open with, then on the panel where you chose the application, there's a check box for always using that app. Select it and it will restore Word as the default app. Incidentally, there's no reason why you can't have both office suites on your computer.
