\t means tab, not space. If you forgot to check the Regular Expression
checkbox, then the "*" will be replaced
by the string "\t" rather than a tab.

If you want to replace all asterisks (*) with spaces, just type the asterisk
in the search field and then a single space in the replace field. Leave the
Regular expression's checkbox unchecked.

But why replace the asterisk by a space? Why not replace it by nothing, that
is just remove the asterisk? Just make sure that
the Replace field is empty (just try click and try to highlight the whole
field to verify that there are no spaces there).

I must be doing something wrong.
I have had occassion to try and replace a keystroke with a 'space' (not
a tab I know) and I have been unable to do it.
Sometimes when importing text into calc or base I have been given a
large number of entries with an asterisk in front of a number which I
need to be rid of.
I tried you little trick given above... all that happened was that the *
was replaced by a \t. I was hoping for a space.

Thanks

Kevin
