I think the problem is that I changed some setting in Tools > Options (or elsewhere) that inadvertently turned it off. I say this because it worked the old way (Ctrl+Shift+hex) until I switched from 2.02 under Dapper to 2.04 under Edgy., at which point I discovered that the method had been changed to Ctrl-Shift+u, enter hex number, then spacebar. That method continued to work after I upgraded from 2.04 under Edgy to 2.2 under Feisty. In other words, it was working in 2.2 under Feisty just the other day. Suddenly now it doesn't work at all. I check Update Manager weekly, but I don't recall any updates for OOo or anything else that could have affected this. I also have a dekstop computer with Feisty and OOo 2.2, where the feature still works fine. I t must be something I did, but I have scoured the settings in Tools > Options and can't find anything. The only thing I know for sure that I did recently was to edit my dictionary settings. I removed a bunch of mistyped words from my auto-completion file and I also went into Tools > Options > Language > Writing Aids and edited my user dictionary settings. All I did in there was add an = to the end of all the personal names so Writer wouldn't hyphenate them. Neither action should have turned off entering Unicode characters, but something did and that's the only change I have made recently. I can still enter characters with Insert > Special Character, but that is very time consuming. I'm a linguistics major and I need to type IPA characters constantly so I need to get this feature working again.
