For future reference in case this happens to someone else, here is what I did: 1) Opened Synaptic on my desktop computer where it is still working fine. Searched on "openoffice." Went through and made sure everything that was installed on the desktop was also installed on the laptop (the problem machine), and removed everything installed on the laptop unless it was also installed on the desktop machine. This resulted in the stange symbol fonts in all menus. However, inserting special Unicode characters from the keyboard worked again. Narrowed the problem down to openoffice.org-gnome and openoffice.org-gtk -- removing them restores menus, but kills keyboard entry of Unicode characters, and vice-versa. 2) Searched on "gtk" in Synaptic on both computers. Went through and synchronized all packages so both machines had the same packages installed, including adding openoffice.org-gnome and -gtk on the laptop. I did not add any packages to the desktop, since it was working. I just added packages to the laptop if they were installed on the desktop, and removed packages from the laptop if they were not installed on the desktop -- trying to eliminate possible conflicts. 3) Restarted the laptop. Still no joy. Messed up menus, but keyboard entry of Unicode working. 4) On a hunch I went into System > Preferences > Fonts on both machines and noted that the desktop was set to Sans for everything except the monospaced font, where the laptop was set to Marlett for everything except the monospaced font. Changed the latop to Sans. Launched OOo and menu fonts are all back to normal, PLUS keyboard entry of Unicode characters is also working. YAY!!! The mystery is why this got goobered up. I certainly did not uninstall openoffice.org-gnome and -gtk on the laptop, nor did I make any changes to the system font preferences. Oh well. Thanks for all the suggestions.
