Users who are not subscribed to this list are, nevertheless, allowed to
post to it. When you reply to such a post and do not explicitly include
the poster's e-mail address in the To: or Cc: list of your reply then
the poster won't receive it and you will have been wasting your time.
You can tell if a poster is unsubscribed by looking at the *headers* of
the e-mail. If and only if the headers include "Delivered-To: moderator
for [email protected]" then the poster is *not* subscribed. Note that
there will *always* be a "Delivered-To: mailing list
[email protected]" header regardless of the status of the poster.
I use Thunderbird (Mozilla's e-mail program) to read this list. It can
be taught (via filters) to automatically "tag" messages with this
header/value so that I don't actually need to look at the headers -
tagged messages are highlighted in the inbox. Other e-mail programs may
offer similar functionality.
As far as I know, if you read this list via a Newsreader (via Gmane)
then you'll never see the relevant header and you won't be able to tell
if the poster of a given message is subscribed or not.
