As far as I know, if you read this list via a Newsreader (via Gmane) then you'll never see the relevant header and you won't be able to tell if the poster of a given message is subscribed or not.

Actually if you read via Gmane you can tell, you just need to look at
the headers. For example the headers will show:

Delivered-To: mailing list [email protected]
Delivered-To: moderator for [email protected] <== this is the
relevent header

The problem is that not all news readers allow you to sort on headers,
and it really shouldn't be up to any responder to bother looking up
headers when replying. But then this list has discussed this before... :-)
Ah. Interesting
I've seldom look at headers (not my job:-),
Not my "job" to respond to this list in the first place ... ;-)

but if there is a
[moderated] tag in the subject line I'll try to add a cc to the
unsubscribed user. Also if it's obvious that the poster is unsubscribed
(from the post details) then I'll look at the headers.

Personally I think that allowing unsub'ed posters is probably OK *if*
each unsub'ed post is tagged with [moderated]. I'd prefer that all be
subscribed, but if _all_ unsub'ed posts were tagged 'moderated] or such
folks here wouldn't have these discussions every month.

Yes, I really don't understand why *all* posts from unsubscribed users can't have the "[moderated]" tag.

My main reason for raising this again is that there is currently one poster (no names, no pack drill) who is providing really good answers but is largely wasting his time because he isn't including the unsubscribed posters' e-mail addresses in his replies. and so is whispering into a gale.
