I believe what Adrian is looking for is to embed a password with the document. That way the document is protected regardless of who opens it and what the file permissions are. And the protection would persist regardless of where the document might be copied to, e.g. from an ext3 file system to an NTFS fs. Writer does provide the ability to embed a password in the document. Unfortunately that password is then required to open the document (not what Adrian is looking for). With MS Word one can choose to require a password to open the document (same feature) or only require a password to change the document. If the latter option is chosen then it is possible to open the document without the password it just isn't possible to save it with the same path and file name. Since there is already a password feature in Writer maybe a request for an enhancement to that feature would be implemented? Where does one submit feature requests? This doesn't help Adrian now but maybe with the next release...
