Interesting. I tried it and got what I would call unexpected results. The expected result being what I've experienced in MS Word. Granted that may not be the goal but that is the frame of reference. The expected result is a 'read only' document that may be opened and may even be edited without the password however it cannot be saved with the same file name without the password. In other words the file that I provide and any OS level copies that might be made cannot be changed without the read only password. [x] Open read only Protect w/ password applied Create document and apply settings above. Save document. Close document. Open document. It cannot be edited. Right click document and it can be edited. Modify document and click save. Document is saved without prompting for password. What is password supposed to do? Close document and open again, not prompted for password and document has retained edits. [ ] Open read only Protect w/ password applied Create document and apply settings above. Save document. Close document. Open document. It is editable. Modify document and click save. Document is saved without prompting for password. Again, what is password meant to do? Close document and open again, not prompted for password and document has retained edits. [x] Open read only Protect has not been used to apply password Create document and apply settings above. Save document. Close document. Open document. It cannot be edited. Right click document and it can be edited. Modify document and click save. Close document and open again, not prompted for password and document has retained edits. [ ] Open read only Protect w/o password applied Create document and apply settings above. Save document. Close document. Open document. It is editable immediately. Modify document and click save. Document is saved with edits. I cannot achieve the desired result of preventing the user from modifying the document, the original file, that I might send them. Although it is possible to prevent editing by checking '[x] Open read only' the document can be edited by right clicking and selecting edit. At that point any changes can be saved to the original file provided to the user. So I don't think this achieves the result I believe is desired - providing a file where the recipient cannot change the original file object without knowing the password.
