If you truly do not want the document to be modified by the
receiver, then why not send it in .PDF format?
FILE -> EXPORT AS PDF
PDF will keep the actual file that is sent from being changed but
cannot protect the extraction of the information.
True, but re-read the OP's question:

A PDF file would do what he is requesting. He didn't say anything about not
wanting anything copied and pasted from the file.
