Thank you for your prompt reply. When I try to open Notepad a box
comes up and says "Notepad has stopped working. Windows is searching
for a solution" Then another box replaces the first and says " A
problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will
close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
It wasn't a complaint towards you. I simply thought it might be vista
not getting on with your software and if you had encountered this
before and have a solution.

Hello,
I recently downloaded the latest version of Open Office. I have been
using this software since June. My notepad has stopped working. I
wondered if the two are linked. My laptop uses Windows Vista and I
am aware that there are problems.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Liz Walsh
Please describe in detail what you try to do with Notepad that
doesn't work and also exactly what happens, including the exact text
of any messages that are displayed. Simply saying "it doesn't work"
is not giving us a fair chance to help you.

First, I wasn't intending to be rude. What I said was meant merely as a
statement of fact. I'm really puzzled as to why you should think it
condescending but, as you obviously seem to, I apologise.
Second, I'm afraid I have never seen this behaviour before in many years
of using Windows and Notepad, and quite a long time using OpenOffice on
Windows. I Googled your error message and got a few uninformative
results. A few people seem to have seen this error message but I
couldn't find an explicit or precise solution. The best was at
http://www.tabletquestions.com/windows-vista/7890-notepad-has-stopped-working.html
where there seem to be some free programs available to try to fix Vista.
No guarantees though. Who installed Vista on your machine? How long ago?
I think It's *extremely* unlikely that OpenOffice is the cause; it
sounds to me more like a corruption of a key Windows file called The
Registry. Does Wordpad work? Wordpad is more capable than Notepad so if
you can live with it ... If none of the programs at the above mentioned
web site work, I think that to really fix it you may need to re-install
Vista from scratch; perhaps whoever did it originally could help ???
