No expert, but it looks alot like Vista and notepad not getting along.
It could be that Microsoft has yet to put in any effort to update
notepad to suit Vista (or XP).

What purpose are you using notepad for. It could well be that an open
source program suited to your purpose would do a better job.

Examples:
* Notepad++ - http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm
* FCKeditor - http://www.fckeditor.net/

I must admit i use neither of these as i use Notetab light on windows
from habit.

This supports multiple tabs, and remembers the files you had open
between sessions.
