And in your email!  Thanks, Henri.  That looks exactly what I need.  I want to 
get Japanese fonts working in Thunderbird as well.

How does one input from a Western Keyboard?  UK in my case, but I imagine that 
it is much the same on all Western keyboards?

I'm afraid that the Japanese is for my bilingual granddaughter and not for me, 
so I shall have to wait to read your last comment until she comes back from 
her parents in Japan for her next school term at the beginning of January - 
she flew back to Japan just 2 days ago.

Sjhe wants to be able to send emails and illustrated documents to her Japanese 
friends.

I'll let you know how I get on.
