Good work, Lisi! When you choose Japanese in your SCIM box (obtained by clicking on the icon), and start typing on your UK keyboard (I'm using a Scandinavian QWERTY keyboard - haven't had the guts to try Dvořak - but that little difference makes no never minds), the corresponding hiragana glyphs will be inserted into the running text. If you then hit your space bar, SCIM will automatically run through a list of kanji alternatives, from which you - or your granddaughter, can choose the most suitable, by hitting the «Enter» key. At least that's the way it works for me on Gutsy, and I strongly suspect that the same will obtain for you on your distros. Try it and see - which, by the way, is one possible translation of the Japanese phrase I sent you.... Henri
