In the MS Word document, is there any possibility that the table is there but not visible - any mark, placeholder or symbol on the page at all?

That is a possibility. There is the appropriate space for the table between the preceding and succeeding text paragraphs.

In another post you said you opened the document in Word 97. I've used a couple of versions of Word together with OOo Writer. More weird things have happened than I can remember in detail, but since your document shows a space for the table, I think it's worth checking whether display settings have any effect.

I suggest you turn off hardware acceleration for your display and see if the table is visible in that space.

If you haven't done that before, you start (Win XP) by right-clicking on a blank area of the desktop, click "Properties", click the "Settings" tab, click the "Advanced" button and click on the "Troubleshoot" tab. (Don't get sidetracked by the "Troubleshoot" button on the settings tab page.)

Hardware acceleration is controlled by a slider. Move it all the way to the left.

Didn't help. I opened the .odt file and saved it as Word 97 .doc file. I then opened the .doc file with Word 97, and the table was gone.
