your Calc table inside the Writer doc is an OLE object. If you want to
preserve OLE objects when saving as Microsoft formats, you must convert
them into Microsoft format. To do this automatically, choose Tools -
Options - Load/Save - Microsoft Office. Check at least all the boxes in
the (S) column.
Hope this helps

Yep, and for Bob:
I copied a table from Calc (2.3.1 linux) into a clean Writer document.
First I did a copy & paste, then directly below that object I did a
paste special formated RTF which pastes it as a table in the odt document.
I tried copying a selection out of a Calc file, and using the paste special
command. The only option it gave me was "bitmap", and when I selected OK,
it pasted the entire Calc file instead of just the area I selected and copied.
I then saved the doc as an odt and MS Word 97 .doc with all boxes
checked (which I normally have on anyway). I opened the .doc in MS Word
97 on another system and _both_ the ole and the table opened just fine.
I can even double-click the ole and MS Word will open an Excel window
for editing. I can edit the object, go back in the doc and save from
Word, open back up in Word and all is well.
I then unchecked all of the boxes and closed OOo. Reopened OOo and the
.odt and then saved in .doc. Transfered that file to the Windows system,
opened the file in MS Word 2002 and the results are identical as above;
all works just fine... almost. The difference this time is: if I
double-click the ole, MS Word will still open it as an Excel window,
*but* once you are finished editing and click outside back on the doc,
the ole object disappears. Saved that document from Word, reopen, and
sure enough the ole object is gone.
For Uwe:
Now the interesting part is: if I open that last Word document, the one
that I saved in Word where the ole object disappeared (RTF table
remained), in OOo (Windows), I can actually see a frame where the ole
object was. If I double-click that it opens a calc window and the data
is actually there! The difference is that row & column heights are very
large, as is the font, & resizing makes it unmanageable. Right-click it
and select 'Object|Type|Original Size' and the fonts etc go back to
their original size.
I don't have time to experiment with it anymore today, but hope that helps.
