I tried copying a selection out of a Calc file, and using the paste special

Interesting... I'll give it a try in Windows when I get a chance.
I finally got around to running OOo 2.3.1 Windows; I get the same as
under linux when using paste special in Writer to copy the table from Calc:
calc8
GDI metafile
Bitmap
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language)
DDE link
Unformated text
Formated text [RTF]
If you do not get those choices, then you may have a problem with your
install.

Thanks Gary. Now things are really weird. I tried it again: I selected a
portion of a Calc spreadsheet, used the edit/copy command, then used the
paste special command to paste into a Write file, and saved the file, and
finally saved the file in Word 97/2000/XP format. Today, I got the options
you listed above, but the other day I only got the Bitmap option. I opened
the .doc file with Writer, and the table was there, but when I opened the
file with Word 97, it was not visible. Yesterday, another contributer
mentioned something about filters, so I decided to play with the settings
under the View command. In Word 97 there are five sub-commands: Normal,
Online Layout, Page Layout, Outline, and Master Document. It turns out
that the table is visible in Online Layout and Page Layout but not in the
other three.
It seems that we have solved the mystery of the disappearing table. My
thanks to everyone.
