I'm new to Writer and having trouble figuring out how to easily set tab stops at
regular intervals. With other word-processing-type programs, I've been able to
set tab stops on the ruler and control their spacing by having the tab stops
snap to particular increments, e.g., every .15 inch. But I can't find a way to
get tab stops to snap to particular increments on the ruler -- Writer seems to
allow them to go anywhere. I know I can set their location textually in the
paragraph dialog, but that's more cumbersome than setting them via the ruler.
Speaking of such, I've also noticed that when I create a tab stop via the ruler,
I have to confirm it via the paragraph style dialog, which automatically comes
up. This is intrusive and annoying.
Is there some way to create or edit tab stops via the ruler that will (1) only
snap to particular increments and (2) will take effect without my having to deal
with the paragraph style dialog? The books on Writer I have here don't appear
to address these issues.
Thanks,
Scott
PS - I know that tabs are frowned upon, but I'm formatting program source code
using a variable-pitch font, and I don't know of any better way to get line
indents to work correctly. I also know that I can modify the spacing of the
default tab stop locations, but that doesn't let me do what I need to do,
because the first few tab stops should be close together and near the left
margin, but after that the next couple of tab stops should be much closer to the
right margin. (That's where I put source code comments, FWIW.)
