A few years back, I worked at IBM Canada.  Part of my work was
supporting antivirus software.  Initially, it was IBM's own antivirus
program, which worked well, but then we switched to Norton.  It was a
pig.  We had to tell users to schedule the scan for their usual lunch
time, so they wouldn't have to put up with the performance hit.  I've
run OS/2 and then Linux on my own computers, so viruses are not a
concern at home.
