Other reasons for stopping replies without a descriptive subject (or, more exactly, other reasons why descriptive subject are required by the OFFICIAL guidelines) are that: archives searches become faster and much more accurate, subjects have a greater weight in indexing than terms in the body most subscribers simply ignore threads without a subject (you cannot waste half an hour to open messages when, very likely, almost all of them will be of no help for you). But if the replies are titled properly all the other subscribers who are interested in that subject will immediately see it, learn from it and not risk asking the same question to the list two days later. For the record, there was a guy in the threads of early january who explicitly said that his reason to subscribe and lurk had been just to open interesting replies to learn from them, but he obviously couldn't if subjectless messages were the majority.
