I looked at the Format>While typing, and that is ticked, as it should
be. To _accidentally_ hit this series of keystrokes seems unlikely, to
say the least.
Saying that the settings "must have gotten corrupted" seems to me a
little like saying "the bad Fairy must have come along and hexed your
computer." It explains, with no hint as to what caused this corruption,
nor why it should suddenly come up one day, then go away to come back
again at some indeterminate time.
Have you saved your settings to your default template (or to some other
template that might be behind certain or your documents)?
