Hi Jim,

The last few times, a new install of a new version of OpenOffice has
simply accepted my settings, which is nice.

However it still on occasion (latest being this evening) unaccountably
switches around to the "factory defaults," that is, the curly quotes,
and changing of double hyphens into one dash, among others.
[...]
The only simple way I can think of, is the by accident the menu
'Format|Auto format|While typing' is ticked.
If that is not the case, it must be something like that the file with
your settings (common.xcu, IIRC) got corrupted and is replaced by a new
one on restarting of OOo.

Kindest regards,
Cor

In addition ...
a) From the Help:
To stop replacing quotation marks:
1.Choose Tools - AutoCorrect.
2.Click the Custom Quotes tab
3.Clear the Replace check box(es).

b) Also, Tools>AutoCorrect>Options>Replace "standard" quotes with "custom"
quotes

c) Also, Tools>AutoCorrect>Replace and check for hyphens.

Thanks, Harold. I know how to fix the settings. What I don't know is how to prevent the settings from automatically switching in the first place, nor even why they should.

I looked at the Format>While typing, and that is ticked, as it should be. To _accidentally_ hit this series of keystrokes seems unlikely, to say the least.

I apologise if you think I was being condescending; I certainly didn't mean to be.

When you change the settings to how you want them, do you have the Quickstarter running? I have found in the past that it interferes with OO's memory of such changes. My theory is that it holds open some file so that changes made in e.g. Writer don't get flushed to disk. Try quitting Quickstarter and all other OO-related processes; then start Writer separately and make the changes. Close Writer before re-starting Quickstarter.
