But they'll still be writing for a splintered market because "Linux" is
not a monolith. There are many different kernel versions out there,
different distributions with different methods of handling stuff
(including "standard" file locations, packaging, etc.). For that reason
alone, there'll be far fewer people interested in writing Linux viruses.
Far less bang-for-the-buck or return for effort expended.
Even if there are determined people who go ahead and create Linux
viruses for specific segments of "Linux", those won't cause a fraction
of the problems that they cause on Windows platforms, except for the few
and the stupid who run their Linux boxes as user "root" all the time.
... and they _deserve_ what they get.
