I just downloaded the new free edition of "open office 2.4"
You cannot buy OOo (OpenOffice.org) it is always free. You can buy media which contains the program, but OOo has always been and always will be free.
and all the files are loaded into my computer. However, there is no window in my tray, and every time I try to open any of the functions, a window pops up telling me I have to buy it..........have I downloaded the wrong program?
It sounds as if you have downloaded the wrong program, because OOo does not have any "pop-up" of the kind you describe. The correct place to go to download the latest version (2.4.0) is:
