And to add to Mike's advise & others that did not cc you; Win98 is no
longer supported & in fact Windows XP is soon to be no longer supported.

I highly recommend that you go to linux. You'd be surprised, linux can
breath new life into old hardware. You might find these helpful;

Nearly all of my linux systems (Ubuntu) are on hardware that was thrown
out (primarily by schools that thought they needed to buy bigger &
better because of Vista). I have systems from 350Mhz to 2.4Ghz and they
all run just fine - providing of course that you have sufficient drive
space and memory.

That said; some _very_ old hardware with limited memory (64MB for
example) runs better with Win98 and older MS Office. On those systems,
if the license and software is already in place, it generally is better
just to leave them as they are.
