I would strongly agree with you in general - In the long run however
given the number of low - mid range hardware vendors that are

True. A low end computer for $200 - $300 with Linux, or add an extra
$100 for Windows. As soon as XP is gone (soon), it will take more cost
for Vista because of increased memory requirements.
Microsoft has already announced they'll extend XP for those low end
systems. However, as always, Linux provides better performance than XP
on the same hardware. Also, I understand that some vendors reduce the
hardware, to help keep the cost down, when Windows is installed. This
will cause a further performance difference.
